2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac - The Original SUV/Truck Crossover

See Our Preowned Explorer Sport Trac Inventory!!

The 2007 Sport Trac is part of the third generation of this model; it first debuted in 2001, and was one of the original sport utility vehicle/pickup crossovers.   The Explorer Sport Trac was redesigned for the 2007 model year.  The 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac is a four-door, five-passenger, midsize pickup that comes in two trim levels, the XLT and the Limited. For 2007 a new 4.6-liter V8 engine is available that generates 292 horsepower along with an equally new six-speed automatic transmission.  Also for this year the Sport Trac has gotten bigger, both wider and longer, giving the cabin more room for passengers and cargo.  Styling is new and fresh, and it brings the Sport Trac back into the family of Ford light duty trucks.  When the Sport Trac first debuted it was a unique vehicle, but today it has many competitors, including the Honda Ridgeline, Chevy Avalanche, Dodge Dakota Quad Cab and Nissan Frontier Crew Cab. Fuel economy range for the 2007 Explorer Sport Trac is estimated at 21 mpg on the highway and 15 mpg in the city.

Sport Trac Power

The 2007 Explorer Sport Trac has the same engines available as the Ford Explorer.  This includes a 4.0-liter V-6 with 210 horsepower and 254 pounds-feet of torque, and a 4.6-liter V-8 that produces 292 hp and 300 pounds-feet of torque.  Going with the optional V8 will give you some of the best power in the class.  Ford V8s in general are at the top of their game.  A V8 4x2 Sport Trac is now rated to tow up to 6800 pounds. Both engines are available with two- or four-wheel drive.

Driving the Explorer Sport Trac

The Sport Trac for 2007 now has an increased towing capacity. Braking is solid, and is actually very firm, and the ABS keeps everything under control. Driving the Explorer Sport Trac is smooth and controllExplorer Sport Traced.  The Sport Trac has an independent rear suspension, a design associated with sports cars, and this gives it good handling. There are not many other competitors in this class with this advanced type of suspension; only the Honda Ridgeline can claim this.  Yes, driving the Sport Trac may feel like a truck, especially going over bumps, but it feels like a truck with good abilities.

2007 Cabin

The seats in the Sport Trac are redesigned to be lighter and take up less room.  Because the Sport Trac increased in size for 2007, the cabin is now larger and more spacious.  A streamlined instrument panel and dash present a friendlier, easier to use array of controls and displays.   The 2007 Ford Sport Trac is actually pretty similar to its sibling Ford Explore.  Room in the rear doorways for feet when climbing in and out is cramped, but once inside, there's decent leg room.  Compared to the competition, the Sport Trac’s interior is right about in the middle of the market.  Back in the bed, a shallow, covered bin running the width of the floor is placed inconveniently all the way forward and thus out of reach from the tailgate, and a small, covered bin is recessed in the floor at each side behind the wheelhouses; good ideas, but not nearly on a par with the Ridgeline's lockable, 8.5 cubic-foot trunk in the floor of the bed aft of the wheel housings.

Ford Sport Trac

Explorer Sport-trac Design

The biggest change for the 2007 Sport Trac exterior is the length, the wheelbase extends by almost five inches, and overall length is (bumper to bumper) about the same. The Sport Trac is actually longer than the Explorer; the Explorer may be people oriented, but the Sport Trac’s extra length gives a less choppy, more controlled ride.  The extra length for 2007 also has given the Ford Explorer Sport Trac wider door openings, making it easier to get in and out.  More defined and more sharply creased wheel openings further de-emphasize the added length.

2007 Lineup

The Explorer Sport Trac is available in two trim levels: XLT and Limited. XLT models start with gray bumper cladding, black roof rails and 16-inch wheels. Limited editions upgrade to 18-inch wheels, body-colored bumpers, silver roof rails and fog lamps.

Safety Features

Safety features for the Sport Trac are excellent.  Standard features include rollover mitigation, in the form of Ford's Roll Stability Control, which senses impending rollovers and attempts to prevent them by applying individual brakes. Other standard safety features on all models include the required front airbags and child safety seat anchors (LATCH) plus Advance Trac stability control; front seat-mounted side airbags to protect the upper body in side impacts; four-wheel antilock brakes; and tire pressure monitors.

Summary

The new 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac is a versatile vehicle, as it works as both a truck and an SUV.  It has the power and cargo bed to haul, along with a full two-door, five passenger SUV-like cabin.  At a reasonable price, and a leader in the competition, the 2007 Sport Trac is an excellent value.
