Ford has long promised such a small fuel efficient car for its U.S. lineup. The Ford Fiesta is making a comeback in the US for 2011, prompted by an increased demand for better fuel economy with a reasonable price. Ford has been working on what it thinks will be a competitive minicar. The concepts were first unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, 2007 Guangzhou Motor Show. The 2011 Ford Fiesta is based on Ford's new Verve concept that made its US debut at the North American International Auto Show.  The Fiesta is expected to arrive in the US in early 2010 as a 2011 model. The idea surrounding the Ford Fiesta is a basic design that can be built and sold profitably the world over, because one car serving many markets drastically cuts development costs and raises profit potential. The 2011 Ford Fiesta will be closely related to the next-generation Fiesta sold in Europe and elsewhere. The Fiesta marks the beginning of a worldwide transformation at Ford, which will now rely heavily on its European design and engineering operations to help craft its future products. Fiesta will be the first of these global models, though plenty more are expected in the future.

Fiesta Design

The 2011 Ford Fiesta has that futuristic look that many new car buyers are looking for. The Ford Fiesta will share a new B2E corporate platform with the Mazda 2 (a model not available in the US), but have different styling and perhaps different powertrains, too. It will look more conservative than the Verve concept, which Ford says suggests the general “design language” of the production car. But the concept certainly won’t be another plain two-box appliance like the Fiesta sold here way back in 1977-1980. Size wise, the 2011 Ford Fiesta should be close to the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, and the Chevrolet Aveo, but a generous wheelbase versus overall length should make for a surprisingly roomy four-seater. The Fiesta is a four sedan styled vehicle, but will eventually be also offered as a hatchback.

2011 Ford Power and Driving

Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta is front wheel drive.  Powertrains will come from the Euro-market Fiesta, which offers twincam 4-cylinder engines, likely including the 1.6, or perhaps a 1.8-liter enlargement providing the extra low-end torque that would be suitable for U.S. driving conditions. Transmissions should comprise a 5-speed manual and an optional 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The Fiesta will carry ‘PowerShift’, a new dual-clutch transmission which behaves like an automatic transmission, but weighs less than a 4-speed auto, and helps increase fuel economy by about nine percent. Standard equipment should include antilock brakes, front torso side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Traction control will certainly be available, maybe even standard. Stability control is a likely option for the Fiesta.

Inside the Fiesta

Ford is moving away from the bare-bones compact concept of the late '70s to a more lavish and well-equipped model for today. Many of the features and options offered on the 2011 Ford Fiesta will be those normally offered on more luxurious cars. Still, Ford intends to keep the price down to entice a multitude of buyers, this meaning that the Fiesta will be an excellent value. The cabin of the Fiesta will include integrated lighting, LCD screen controls, and a myriad of features. The 2011 Ford Fiesta may offer upscale extras like sport suspension, 16- or 17-inch tires to replace standard 15s, power windows, keyless power door locks, perhaps even a navigation system. The options list will almost certainly show the new Ford Sync system for voice-activated control of cell phones and portable music players.2011 Ford Fiesta

Closing Thoughts

The 2011 Ford Fiesta, unlike its rather boxy and weak predecessor, will blow people away with its new look and a variety of packages, Ford promises. The European-styled supermini is already in production in some areas but will be unveiled/released here in the U.S. in early 2010. The bottom line is Ford has created a European-styled car that offers superior technology, design, and fuel efficiency. The North American Fiesta will be built at the automaker's Cuautitlan assembly plant beginning in early 2010, which is being transformed from a truck to a small car production facility as part of a $3 billion investment in Ford's Mexican operations. For buyers, what will matter more is that this won’t be the typical, bare bones subcompact. Ford promises that Fiesta will be a surprisingly lavish and well-equipped model. There will be plenty of competition for this much anticipated Ford model, as many auto makers are getting into the sub-compact, high fuel efficient vehicle market. TVisit the official Ford Fiesta site for more information.  he 2011 Ford Fiesta could well displace the bottom-end versions of the compact Focus. The Fiesta is offered at around $18,000 in Europe; U.S. prices haven't been announced. Prices are likely to start at around $12,000 and range up to $16,000 loaded.
