About Colfax Iowa
Colfax Iowa is located just a short drive away from Ankeny and is
well within a half hour reach. Colfax, located in Jasper county, was
home to the first large scale coal mine in the area. It was 5 miles
southeast of town and connected to the Rock Island by a long railroad
spur. From 1881 to 1900, the Jasper County Coal and Railway Company
operated a number of mines north of Colfax. The Colfax Consolidated Coal
Company, formed in 1902, brought the mines of Colfax under a common
operator. Today, Downtown Colfax is a lively area with a variety of
businesses including an old fashioned ice cream fountain and award
winning pizza. Recreation is also abundant in Colfax including a 9 hole
golf course with a country club, bowling alley, swimming pool, outdoor
